ASME BPVC.III.1.NF-2025

2025 ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section III, Division 1, Subsection NF, Supports

PUBLISH DATE 2025
ASME BPVC.III.1.NF-2025
The purpose of ASME BPVC.III.1.NF-2025 is to define the mandatory requirements for the material, design, fabrication, and examination of all metallic supports that carry loads from nuclear pressure-retaining components to the building structure.
What It Is Used For This document is a major subsection of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section III, Division 1. It is used by support designers and fabricators to ensure that the structural elements holding nuclear components—such as vessels, piping, and pumps—are robust enough to prevent failure under all operational and accident conditions. Failure of a support could cause a failure in the nuclear pressure boundary, so these supports are held to the same high-quality standards as the pressure vessels themselves. The scope covers supports for components classified as Class 1, 2, 3, and MC. Its primary uses are:
  • Structural Design and Analysis: It provides specific rules for designing supports to resist all credible loads, including static loads (dead weight, pressure) and extreme dynamic loads (earthquake, pipe rupture forces, or thermal expansion stresses).
  • Types of Supports: It classifies and provides rules for the three main types of metallic supports:
    • Plate and Shell Supports: Supports that resemble small pressure vessels (e.g., vessel skirt supports).
    • Linear Supports: Standard structural members like beams, columns, and trusses (e.g., pipe rack supports).
    • Standard Supports: Pre-engineered devices like springs, snubbers (shock absorbers), and constant load hangers.
  • Fabrication and Quality Control: It details the requirements for welding procedures (referencing Section IX), non-destructive examination (NDE), and material control to ensure the support is built precisely to design and material specifications.
In essence, BPVC.III.1.NF ensures the structural integrity of the backbone that physically holds the nuclear steam supply system in place, allowing the pressure-retaining components (Subsections NB, NC, etc.) to function safely under all conceivable plant conditions.
