Reinforced Thermoset Plastic Corrosion-Resistant Equipment
ASME RTP-1-2023 is an American National Standard developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The standard provides comprehensive rules for the design, fabrication, and quality assurance of vessels and tanks constructed from Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP)—specifically, Reinforced Thermoset Plastic.
The standard's scope is strictly limited to stationary vessels used for storage, accumulation, or processing of substances, where the pressure does not exceed 15 psig (103 kPag), both internal and/or external (above any hydrostatic head).
What it is Used For
The primary use of ASME RTP-1-2023 is to establish the minimum requirements necessary to ensure the safety, integrity, and long-term durability of non-metallic pressure vessels used in highly corrosive service.
Unlike metal pressure vessels governed by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), RTP-1 addresses the unique material properties and fabrication methods of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. It is used extensively in industries that handle aggressive chemicals, such as:
