ASME RTP-1-2023

ASME RTP-1-2023 is an American National Standard developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The standard provides comprehensive rules for the design, fabrication, and quality assurance of vessels and tanks constructed from Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP)—specifically, Reinforced Thermoset Plastic.

The standard's scope is strictly limited to stationary vessels used for storage, accumulation, or processing of substances, where the pressure does not exceed 15 psig (103 kPag), both internal and/or external (above any hydrostatic head).

What it is Used For

The primary use of ASME RTP-1-2023 is to establish the minimum requirements necessary to ensure the safety, integrity, and long-term durability of non-metallic pressure vessels used in highly corrosive service.

Unlike metal pressure vessels governed by the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), RTP-1 addresses the unique material properties and fabrication methods of fiberglass-reinforced plastic. It is used extensively in industries that handle aggressive chemicals, such as:

  • Chemical Processing
  • Water and Wastewater Treatment
  • Pulp and Paper

Key areas covered by the standard include:

  • Materials of Construction: Specifies the requirements for the thermoset resins (like vinyl ester or polyester) and the reinforcing fibers (typically glass).
  • Design by Rules and Analysis: Provides detailed formulas and methods for designing vessel components, including shells, heads, and nozzles, to withstand pressure, wind, seismic loads, and internal stresses.
  • Fabrication and Quality Assurance: Details processes like hand lay-up, spray-up, and filament winding, along with rigorous requirements for fabricator qualification, inspection, and non-destructive testing (such as acoustic emission testing).
  • Overpressure Protection: Mandates the requirements for overpressure protection devices to safeguard the vessel against excessive pressure.
  • Certification: Fabricators who comply fully with the standard and undergo audit by ASME are authorized to apply the ASME RTP-1 Certification Mark (Stamp), which signifies that the vessel was manufactured under a strict quality assurance program.
