This specification covers the standard for heat-treated carbon manganese-silicon steel plates intended for fusion welded pressure vessels and structures.

The steel shall be killed and undergo normalization, quenching, and tempering.

Heat and product analyses shall be performed on the materials and results shall conform to the required values in chemical composition in carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, copper, nickel, chromium, and molybdenum.

Mechanical testing like tension test shall be done on the plates and shall conform to the required tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation.

1.1 This specification2 covers heat-treated carbon-manganese-silicon steel plates intended for fusion welded pressure vessels and structures.

1.2 Plates furnished under this specification are available in the following three classes:

  • Class 1:

    • Heat Treatment: Normalized
    • Thickness:
      • 21/2 in. and under [65 mm and under]
      • Over 21/2 in. [Over 65 mm]
    • Yield Strength, min: 50 ksi [345 MPa] for 21/2 in. and under, 45 ksi [310 MPa] for over 21/2 in.
    • Tensile Strength, min: 70 ksi [485 MPa] for 21/2 in. and under, 65 ksi [450 MPa] for over 21/2 in.
  • Class 2:

    • Heat Treatment: Quenched and tempered
    • Thickness:
      • 21/2 in. and under [65 mm and under]
      • Over 21/2 to 4 in. [Over 65 to 100 mm]
      • Over 4 in. [Over 100 mm]
    • Yield Strength, min: 60 ksi [415 MPa] for 21/2 in. and under, 55 ksi [380 MPa] for over 21/2 to 4 in., 46 ksi [315 MPa] for over 4 in.
    • Tensile Strength, min: 80 ksi [550 MPa] for 21/2 in. and under, 75 ksi [515 MPa] for over 21/2 to 4 in., 70 ksi [485 MPa] for over 4 in.
  • Class 3:

    • Heat Treatment: Quenched and tempered
    • Thickness:
      • 21/2 in. and under [65 mm and under]
      • Over 21/2 to 4 in. [Over 65 to 100 mm]
      • Over 4 in. [Over 100 mm]
    • Yield Strength, min: 55 ksi [380 MPa] for 21/2 in. and under, 50 ksi [345 MPa] for over 21/2 to 4 in., 40 ksi [275 MPa] for over 4 in.
    • Tensile Strength, min: 80 ksi [550 MPa] for 21/2 in. and under, 75 ksi [515 MPa] for over 21/2 to 4 in., 70 ksi [485 MPa] for over 4 in.

1.3 The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the material to meet the specified mechanical property requirements.

1.4 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system is to be used independently of the other without combining values in any way.
