Standard Test Method for Determination of Bromine and Chlorine in UF<inf>6</inf> and Uranyl Nitrate by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectroscopy

PUBLISH DATE 2026
PAGES 4
ASTM C1508-26

1.1 This method covers the determination of bromine (Br) and chlorine (Cl) in uranium hexafluoride (UF6) and uranyl nitrate solution by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. The method as written covers the determination of bromine in UF6 over the mass fraction range of 0.2 µg/g to 8 µg/g, relative to uranium. The chlorine in UF6 can be determined over the mass fraction range of 4 µg/g to 160 µg/g, relative to uranium. Higher concentrations may be covered by appropriate dilutions. The detection limit for Br is 0.2 µg/g relative to uranium and for Cl is 4 µg/g relative to uranium.

1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

1.3 This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 The method is designed to determine whether or not the tested materials meet the specifications as given in Specifications C787 and C788.
