Standard Guide for Testing Performance of Desiccant (Bare or Contained) for use in Sealed Packaging
1.1 This guide provides a uniform basis for identifying the key information and evaluations needed to determine compliance with manufacturers’ specified performance ranges and performance characteristics important for user selection.
1.2 This guide is intended to assist in determining the unit size of the desiccant as well as the desiccants’ ability to sorb moisture, the rate at which moisture is sorbed, and control humidity levels within the packaging without inducing corrosion through contact with packaging or product, or producing unacceptable levels of dust when agitated.
1.3 This guide covers testing for desiccants typically identified as adsorbent such as clay, silica gel, zeolite, and similar and does not cover absorbent or deliquescent desiccants.
1.4 This guide may not cover all criteria needed for every customer such as particle size, reactivation, and containment durability.
1.5 Units— The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard.

4.1 This guide provides a uniform system to evaluate desiccant materials placed within packaging to protect and maintain product integrity.
Materials may be bare material, bagged material, or material otherwise contained to provide defined humidity control of conditions within the packaging.
4.2 This guide may be used to perform comparisons between manufacturer claims or various materials, or both.
4.3 This guide may be used to determine performance levels for user selection of preferred desiccants.
