Standard Test Method for Determination of Lead in New Enamel Paint Samples through X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analysis
1.1 This test method covers a procedure specified for the analysis of new enamel paint samples for the determination of lead (Pb) in the concentration range of 50 ppm to 300 ppm using the standardization of an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer against inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). This test method does not address the use and performance of ICP-OES for the analysis of Pb in paint, nor does it cover the generation of the ICP-OES versus XRF correlation.
1.2Â This test method should be used by analysts experienced in the use of XRF, the interpretation of spectral and matrix interferences, and procedures for their correction.
1.3Â In this test method, specific methods are cited for preparing test solutions of dried, homogenized new enamel paint samples for analysis.
1.4 It is the user’s responsibility to ensure the validity of this test method for sampling materials of untested matrices.
1.5Â No detailed operating instructions are provided because of differences among various makes and models of suitable XRF analyzers. Instead, the analyst shall follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the particular instrument.
1.6Â In this test method, comparative accuracy of different devices or the precision between instruments of the same make and model are not addressed.
1.7Â In this test method, there are notes that are explanatory and are not part of the mandatory requirements of this test method.
1.8Â The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.9Â This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.10Â This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
5.1Â New paint must be monitored for Pb content to determine the potential Pb hazard, with most new and proposed regulations requiring a maximum permissible concentration not exceeding 90 ppm. With recent efforts directed to establishing and enforcing these regulations in low- and middle-income countries, effective and efficient test methods are required for the analysis of new enamel paint samples that may contain Pb.
5.2Â This test method shall be used to analyze samples that have been obtained to ensure compliance with laws that govern Pb content in new enamel paints.
5.3Â This test method may be used to analyze samples that have been collected for risk assessment purposes.
5.4Â This test method is intended for use with dried, homogenized new enamel paint samples that are prepared for subsequent analysis by XRF methods.
