Standard Terminology for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Needs Assessment
1.1Â This terminology defines all of the key terms relevant to the creation and effective communication of a comprehensive diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) needs assessment.
1.2Â This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.3Â This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
2.1Â In the realm of DEI, precise and shared understanding of terminology is foundational to creating a robust needs assessment.
2.2 Terms such as “diversity,” “equity,” and “inclusion” are complex and multifaceted, often varying in interpretation across organizations and individuals.
2.2.1Â While the benefits for DEI work are clear, well-researched and proven, because the core terms are often misunderstood, the work can face a varied amount of organizational resistance.
2.2.2 Without a standardized vocabulary, conversations can lead to confusion or miscommunication. For example, “diversity” might be narrowly understood as representation of different racial or ethnic groups, whereas others might include broader categories like gender identity, age, or socioeconomic status.
2.2.3Â Additionally, many terms have become polarized, leading to understandings rooted in various political and social ideologies as opposed to definitions of the words themselves.
2.3Â Clear and comprehensive definitions of relevant terminology also allows organizations to focus on the terminology that is specific to their industry, defined within the context of that industry.
2.4Â By prioritizing this step, organizations can create a needs assessment that is not only comprehensive but also impactful in advancing DEI goals.
