1.1 Test specimen preparation has a significant effect on the outcome of several acoustical material test methods, including Test Methods C384, C522, E1050, and E2611. The mounting conditions of the test specimen for these test methods require that a seal be created when the material is mounted into the test apparatus. The data accuracy and repeatability for these test methods may be affected if the test specimen is not prepared to fit within the tolerances of the small material test systems associated with this guide. If the specimens are not prepared adequately, the sides of the specimen will interact with the sidewalls of the test apparatus creating boundary conditions that may significantly affect the outcome of the measurement. This guide is for preparation of acoustical materials test specimen for measurement with the aforementioned standard test methods.

1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

5.1 Specimen dimensions have a strong influence on the accuracy of small material acoustic property measurements. The interaction between the mounted specimen and the test fixture creates boundary conditions around the perimeter that may significantly influence the resulting measurement data.

5.2 Measurements following Test Methods C384, C522, E1050, and E2611 can be made with high precision. The specimen should be precisely cut. The fit should not be too tight or too loose. Irregular nonreproducible airspaces behind the specimen should also be prevented. If these suggestions are not followed, the resulting data could be misleading. The largest causes of measurement variation are the preparation and installation of the test specimen. Preparation and mounting of the specimen may significantly affect the measurement result leading to uncertainties greater than those listed in the Precision and Bias section of the measurement standard.
