Packaging code -- Use of desiccants in packaging

PUBLISH DATE 1968
BSI BS 1133-19-19:1968

Function: The primary role of a desiccant is to remove moisture from the surrounding environment, thereby preventing damage caused by humidity.

Choice: Selecting the appropriate desiccant depends on factors such as the nature of the product being protected, the desired moisture level, environmental conditions, and the capacity of the desiccant to absorb moisture.

Method of calculating quantity of desiccant:

  • Determine the volume of the packaging or enclosed space.
  • Identify the permissible relative humidity for the product.
  • Calculate the initial moisture content and the equilibrium moisture content.
  • Use the moisture adsorption capacity of the desiccant.
  • Apply formulas or manufacturer guidelines to estimate the required amount of desiccant needed to maintain the desired humidity level.
