This Part of BS 3221 specifies the basic requirements for free-standing medicine measuring spoons of 5 mL capacity made from plastics materials.

NOTE The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover.

**Requirements for a spoon of such design that it can be set down on a horizontal surface when filled with liquid medicine:**

  • The spoon must have a stable base to prevent tipping.
  • The bowl of the spoon should be deep enough to hold a sufficient amount of liquid medicine without spilling.
  • The handle should be ergonomically designed to allow easy handling without disturbing the liquid.
  • The material should be non-porous and easy to clean, ensuring hygiene.
  • The spoon should be sized appropriately for typical doses of liquid medicine.
  • There should be a design feature, such as a flat or weighted section, to allow the spoon to rest securely on flat surfaces when filled.
