This International Standard specifies an X-ray fluorescence spectrometric method for the determination of the sulphur content of natural and artificial cryolite and of aluminium fluoride for industrial use.

Test for Aluminium Fluoride:

Aluminium fluoride does not dissolve appreciably in water but can be tested by its reaction with sodium hydroxide. When aluminium fluoride is treated with sodium hydroxide solution, the formation of a white gelatinous precipitate of aluminium hydroxide occurs. On heating, this precipitate dissolves to give a clear solution indicating the presence of aluminium ions.

Test for Cryolite:

Cryolite (Na3AlF6) can be tested by dissolving it in dilute sulphuric acid and then treating with sodium hydroxide. The solution gives a white precipitate of aluminium hydroxide confirming the presence of aluminium. Additionally, fluorides can be identified by their reaction with calcium chloride solution in acidic medium to form a white precipitate of calcium fluoride.
