This British Standard specifies the composition, properties and dimensional tolerances for preformed cellular polyethylene (PE) materials for the thermal insulation of pipework. The nominal operating temperature range for the materials is āˆ’ 40 °C to + 80 °C (see note 1).

NOTE 1 Manufacturers have experienced no detrimental effects at service temperatures up to 100 °C. Consideration will be given, therefore, to raising the upper service temperature limit at the next revision of this British Standard.

Requirements for two types of polyethylene pipe insulation are outlined below.

Type 1: Standard Polyethylene Insulation includes:

  • Material should be closed-cell polyethylene foam.
  • Minimum thickness of 1/2 inch.
  • Must have a minimum density of 2.0 pounds per cubic foot.
  • Required to have a thermal conductivity not exceeding 0.28 Btu-in/hr-ft²-°F.
  • Surface should be smooth and free of visible defects.

Type 2: High-Performance Polyethylene Insulation includes:

  • Material must be cross-linked polyethylene foam.
  • Minimum thickness of 3/4 inch.
  • Density requirement of at least 3.0 pounds per cubic foot.
  • Thermal conductivity must not exceed 0.25 Btu-in/hr-ft²-°F.
  • Should possess enhanced UV resistance features.
  • Surface must be treated to resist microbial growth.
