Assessment on Mucocutaneous Blood Exposure

Mucocutaneous blood exposure refers to the contact of blood or other potentially infectious materials with mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth.

The assessment involves:

  • Evaluating the nature of the exposure, including the amount of blood involved.
  • Determining the timing of the exposure relative to the potential infectious source.
  • Identifying the source patient’s infectious status, if known.
  • Assessing the presence of any cuts or lesions on the exposed mucous membranes.
  • Considering the need for post-exposure prophylaxis based on risk factors.

Prompt and thorough assessment is critical to minimize the risk of transmission of bloodborne pathogens such as HIV, HBV, and HCV.
