This standard specifies requirements for the design of Inclusive, Audio & Visual-Based Navigation Systems (IAVBNS) for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, which are technologies used to augment the physical environment by delivering sufficient audio, haptic, visual instructions or instructions in other formats as may be required while minimizing navigational decision complexity. This standard helps design professionals achieve an inclusive environment through cognitively ergonomic IAVBNSs that augment the physical environment with the provision of aural and visual information about environments for users. This standard applies to IAVBNS that provide real-time wayfinding and location support. All provisions of ANSI/CTA-2076 apply to this standard. CTA-2076.1 should be considered both separate from CTA-2076 and additional to it, following as an addendum. IAVBNS features include but are not limited to indoor positioning, points of interest (POI), mapping and localization, low vision maps, virtual tours, pre-journey learning, audio navigation, route directions, step-by-step navigation, distance calculation, location-based announcements and care-giver support and communication. The ability to navigate in one’s community is fundamental to integrating the individual into their community, but individuals with intellectual disabilities due to developmental or acquired conditions face obstacles to independent community travel. IAVBNS are tools to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities overcome barriers to further independent travel.
