The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) conducted a joint survey to measure home illuminance for the purpose of optimizing power measurement of TVs that include Automatic Brightness Control (ABC). The survey collected 234 samples, 199 of which were deemed valid. Key illuminance findings include: 1. Overall, the geometric mean is 14.8 lux and the median is 14 lux. 2. In nighttime conditions, the geometric mean is 12.4 lux and the median is 13 lux. 3. In daytime conditions, the geometric mean is 35.5 lux and the median is 23 lux with noteworthy occurrences beyond 100 lux. 4. There is significant nighttime viewing near 0 lux. Recommended measurement points include 0, 12, and 300 lux with the possibility of an additional point at 35 lux. Measurements between 35 and 300 lux should be avoided. In the case of 0, 12, and 300 lux points, a measurement at 12 lux would have the highest weighting. In the case of 0, 12, 35, and 300 lux points, the lowest three points are similarly weighted. In all cases, 300 lux has a relatively low weighting. Additional data was collected, including seating distance and screen size. The average seating distance was 11.0 feet and the median was 10.3 feet. The average screen size was 35.5-inches with a median of 32.0 inches. Overall, the average seating distance was at 8.3 picture heights.
