The primary purpose of ESD S8.1 is to establish a consistent, globally recognized visual language that alerts personnel to the presence of ESD-sensitive components, the need for protective measures, and the location of grounding points. It prevents confusion between protective materials and sensitive items.

  • ESD Susceptibility Symbol (Warning): A "reaching hand" inside a triangle, with a slash through it, indicating a component or assembly is sensitive to ESD and requires handling precautions (e.g., wrist straps, grounded surfaces).
  • ESD Protective Symbol (Protection): A "reaching hand" inside a triangle with a "bold arc" around it, often referred to as an "umbrella" of protection. This marks items designed to protect components, such as conductive bags, smocks, chairs, and mats.
  • Common Point Ground Symbol: A bullseye-style symbol used to identify the specific, designated location for connecting grounding wires in an ESD Protected Area (EPA).
