The HEI Standards for Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (1st Edition) is one of the Heat Exchange Institute's more recent additions, reflecting the growing use of plate technology in power plant auxiliary services. While shell-and-tube exchangers have traditionally dominated the power industry, Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (GPHEs) are now frequently chosen for closed-cycle cooling water (CCCW) systems due to their extreme thermal efficiency and compact footprint.

This standard provides a rigorous technical bridge between the high-performance requirements of power generation and the unique mechanical nature of plate-and-frame designs.

Technical Scope & Content

Unlike a rigid shell-and-tube unit, a GPHE consists of a series of thin, corrugated metal plates compressed together. The HEI standard defines the engineering requirements for:

  • Thermal Performance & "NTU": GPHEs are capable of very "close approach" temperatures (the difference between the hot fluid leaving and the cold fluid entering). The standard provides formulas for calculating heat transfer in the complex, turbulent channels created by plate corrugations.
  • Plate Geometry: Standards for the "chevron" or "herringbone" patterns on the plates, which are designed to induce turbulence and maximize heat transfer while managing pressure drop.
  • Gasket Integrity: Detailed specifications for gasket materials (such as NBR, EPDM, or Viton) and their seating "grooves." This is the most critical part of the standard, as the gaskets must prevent cross-contamination between the two fluids.
  • The Frame (The "Press"): Requirements for the fixed and movable "covers," the carrying bars, and the tightening bolts that keep the plate pack under immense pressure.
