Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)

PUBLISH DATE 2013
PAGES 214

The **Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)** specify the protection level of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt, etc.) and moisture.

The IP Code consists of two digits:

  • The first digit indicates the level of protection against solid objects and dust.
  • The second digit indicates the level of protection against water.

Each digit ranges from 0 to 6 (first digit) and 0 to 9 (second digit), with higher numbers representing greater protection.

Understanding the IP Code is essential for selecting appropriate enclosures for electrical devices to ensure safety and functionality in different environments.

IEC 60529:1989+A1:1999+A2:2013 applies to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72,5 kV. It has the status of a basic safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.

The contents of the corrigenda of January 2003, of September 2007, and of October 2009 have been included in this copy.

This consolidated version consists of the second edition (1989), its amendment 1 (1999) and its amendment 2 (2013). Therefore, no need to order amendments in addition to this publication.
