IEC 62337 Ed. 2.0 b:2012

Commissioning of electrical, instrumentation and control systems in the process industry - Specific phases and milestones

PUBLISH DATE 2012
PAGES 78
IEC 62337 Ed. 2.0 b:2012

Commissioning of electrical, instrumentation and control systems in the process industry involves specific phases and milestones that ensure proper installation, testing, and operation of these systems.

The commissioning process typically includes the following phases:

  • Planning and Preparation: Defining objectives, resources, schedules, and procedures to ensure a smooth commissioning process.
  • Pre-commissioning: Verifying installation correctness, performing inspections, and conducting preliminary tests.
  • Functional Testing: Ensuring that all components and systems operate according to design specifications under controlled conditions.
  • System Integration: Confirming seamless operation between electrical, instrumentation, and control systems within the broader process environment.
  • Start-up and Performance Testing: Validating system performance during actual operation and making necessary adjustments.
  • Handover and Documentation: Completing final reports, manuals, and training to transfer system ownership to operations.

Key milestones during commissioning include:

  • Completion of design reviews and approvals.
  • Successful completion of pre-commissioning checks.
  • Verification of individual system functionalities.
  • Achievement of integrated system performance benchmarks.
  • Formal acceptance and handover to the operations team.

IEC 62337:2012 defines specific phases and milestones in the commissioning of electrical, instrumentation and control systems in the process industry.

By way of example, it describes activities following the "completion-of-erection" milestone of the project and prior to the "acceptance-of-the-plant" phase by the owner.

Such activities need to be adapted for each type of process/plant concerned.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006.

This edition constitutes a technical revision.

The main changes with respect to the previous edition is: the definition of the documents mentioned in this standard is in accordance with future IEC 62708.
