Upper frequency limit of r.f. coaxial connectors depends on various factors including the connector design, materials used, and manufacturing precision.

Generally, connectors are designed to operate efficiently within a specified frequency range to minimize signal loss and reflection.

Common coaxial connectors such as SMA, N-type, and BNC have the following approximate upper frequency limits:

  • SMA connectors: up to 18 GHz
  • N-type connectors: up to 11 GHz (standard), with precision types reaching higher frequencies
  • BNC connectors: up to 4 GHz

For frequencies beyond these ranges, specialized connectors such as 2.92 mm (also known as K connectors), 2.4 mm, and 1.85 mm connectors are employed, which can operate well into the millimeter-wave region (up to 40 GHz and beyond).

This technical report presents two measurement techniques for determining the first possible higher order mode (non TEM) of r.f. connector beads, connectors, and pairs of connectors.

One method is a transmission measurement technique and the other is an automated reflection measurement technique.

Both techniques were used to determine the resonances of different coaxial connectors.
