General requirements for residual current operated protective devices for DC systems

These devices are designed to detect and trip in the presence of residual currents in direct current (DC) electrical systems to prevent electric shock hazards and fire risks.

The protective devices must be reliable and sensitive enough to detect the minimum residual current levels as specified by applicable safety standards.

They should be capable of operating correctly under various DC system conditions, including different voltage levels and fault scenarios.

Furthermore, the devices must maintain functionality over a wide temperature range and under mechanical stresses typically encountered in their operating environment.

Compliance with relevant international and national standards is essential to ensure safety and interoperability.

IEC TS 63053:2017(E) provides general minimum requirements, recommendations and information for the drafting and testing procedures of standards for residual current operated protective devices.

These devices are intended to be used in DC systems having:

  • a rated voltage not exceeding 400 V DC
  • a rated current not exceeding 125 A

These devices are hereafter referred to as DC-RCDs.
