IEEE Standard for a Functional Architecture of Distributed Energy Efficient Big Data Processing

PUBLISH DATE 2026
PAGES 51
IEEE 1926.1-2025
New IEEE Standard - Active. An energy-efficient functional architecture for big data transmission and processing is specified in this standard. The architecture considers distributed processing nodes in addition to centralized data centers to process big data chunks. Distributed processing nodes provides processing closer to big data sources, which reduces the networking power consumption. The performance of the energy-efficient functional architecture is compared to classical centralized processing of big data under different use cases representing two of the main characteristics of big data: volume and variety.
This recommended practice and guide specifies a functional architecture that supports energy-efficient transmission and processing of big data over data networks. This architecture reduces the total power consumption of big data by enabling big data processing at distributed processing nodes close to the data sources in addition to the centralized data centers.
This recommended practice and guide improves the energy efficiency of data networks involved in the processing and transmission of big data. Dealing with the large data volumes generated by big data applications requires a mechanism to handle the tradeoffs between transmission and processing from an energy consumption viewpoint.
