Requirements for initiating, planning, controlling, and executing the software quality assurance (SQA) processes of a software development or maintenance project are established in this standard.

This standard is harmonized with the software life cycle processes of ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2017, IEEE Std 2675™-2021, and the information content requirements of ISO/IEC/IEEE 15289:2019.

This standard establishes requirements for initiating, planning, controlling, executing, monitoring, evaluating, improving, and validating the software quality assurance (SQA) processes. These SQA processes can be applied throughout the life cycle of software systems.

SQA has evolved to be a fully engaged and independent participant across the life cycle. SQA processes are applicable both before and after software systems go live in production.

SQA focuses on continuous improvement, with consideration of all stakeholder requirements (including security, privacy, and resilience).

This standard is harmonized with the software life cycle process of ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2017 and the information content requirements of ISO/IEC/IEEE 15289:2019, IEEE Std 2675-2021 [B3], and ISO/IEC 5055:2021. This standard and software quality in general supports organizational quality efforts realized through other standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 90003.

NOTE--Annex G presents a sample mapping between ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207:2017 section 6.3.8 and this document’s subclauses.

The purpose of this standard is to support the establishment of SQA processes and operations in support of enhancing the overall quality of systems/software throughout their life cycle. This can be greatly facilitated through processes that support and enhance communication among stakeholders.

The activities described in this standard are intended to give confidence that the software processes can and do produce software products, systems, services, and processes (including related artifacts) of suitable quality for business needs. This is supported by enabling the systems/software to use the SQA processes to produce and collect evidence for analysis to form the basis for giving a justified statement of confidence that the systems/software product or service conforms to its requirements throughout the life cycle.

In considering adoption of this standard, regulatory bodies should be aware that specific application of this standard may already be covered by one or more International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), IEEE, or American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards documents relating to quality assurance, quality management, definitions, or other related matters. It is not the purpose of this document to supersede, revise, or amend existing standards directed to specific industries or applications.
