This Standard Practice outlines the general requirements for protecting sensitive external components and surface areas of valves, fittings, and actuators from damage during surface preparation and application of protective coatings.

The purpose of this Standard Practice is to ensure that assembled valves, fittings, and actuators are not rendered unfit for service or inoperable as a result of poor protective measures being undertaken before and during abrasive blast cleaning and coating operations. This Standard Practice does not apply to the cleaning of component parts prior to initial manufacturing and assembly.
