This Standard covers dimensional, maintenance, and light distribution features that permit the interchange of enclosed side-mounted luminaires for horizontal-burning high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, solid-state lighting (LED) sources, and other light sources used in roadway and area lighting equipment. This type of luminaire has traditionally been used for street or roadway lighting and has commonly been referred to as cobrahead-style luminaires.

Historically, HID luminaires covered by this Standard are elliptical in shape with lenses that meet the requirements of ANSI C136.17. Luminaires other than HID may have a different unique shape.

Excluded from this Standard are luminaires having rectilinear and round shapes covered by ANSI C136.23.

Why is ANSI C136.14 Used? Why is ANSI C136.14 used?

ANSI C136.14 is used to ensure the interchangeability of specific types of roadway and area lighting equipment, most notably the elliptical "cobrahead"-style luminaires. It standardizes the dimensional, maintenance, and light distribution features, allowing different manufacturers' products to be used interchangeably within a system.

Key purposes of ANSI C136.14
  • Standardized interchangeability: This is the primary function of the standard. It provides uniform specifications that allow elliptical, enclosed side-mounted luminaires from different suppliers to be replaced without complications. This saves time and money for municipalities and utility companies when performing maintenance or upgrades.
  • Physical compatibility: By standardizing mounting provisions, such as how the fixture fits on a bracket arm, the standard ensures that a new luminaire will be compatible with existing infrastructure. This prevents the need for costly modifications to existing poles and brackets.
  • Similar light distribution: The standard ensures that the replacement luminaires will have a similar light distribution pattern to the original equipment. This prevents an uneven or inadequate illumination of the roadway or area, which is critical for safety.
  • Consistent maintenance procedures: Standardization also means that maintenance procedures will be similar across different brands. This simplifies training and reduces the complexity of maintaining a large inventory of lighting fixtures.
  • Broad applicability: While it historically focused on high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps, the standard also covers other light sources, making it relevant for modern lighting technologies like LED, as long as they fit the specified parameters.
  • Part of a larger system: As part of the broader ANSI C136 series, this standard contributes to a comprehensive set of guidelines for roadway lighting. This includes other standards for components like attachments (C136.7), field identification (C136.15), and photocontrols (C136.10), all of which work together to create a reliable and well-defined lighting system.
